Background to the African Rainbow Expedition
Considered a bit of a modern day David Livingston, well known North Coast Humanitarian Adventurer and author Kingsley Holgate and his Family and team have succeeded in a number of great African Expeditions, many of which are world firsts.
Like the explorers of old, they to have suffered constantly from the blood sucking bite on the Anopheles mosquito. “It’s like a thud to the heart” says Kingsley “when you get to a village and a mother is screaming, not knowing what to do, her child dying from malaria – 2 days buy dugout to the nearest clinic. I know what its like, I’ve had malaria well over 40 times and when you think these lives can be saved by a simple mosquito net”.
So, they decided to make a difference. Off went KZN, team builder, Bruce Lesley up the East Coast of Africa in search of a traditional Swahili sailing dhow, a big Jahazi that could be used to distribute live saving mosquito nets to mums and to children under the age of 5. Traveling on foot, by bicycle, dugout and public transport he finally found Amina. The ‘Spirit of Adventure’ It was a dream come true.
